Sven Marquardt’s „Disturbing Beauty“ at Haus der Visionäre, Berlin

For decades, Sven Marquardt’s photography has shaped the visual language of a Berlin generation that defined itself between nightlife, art, and fashion. With Disturbing Beauty, Marquardt brings back to Berlin a project previously presented in New York, Montreal, Toronto, Mexico City, and Sofia.

Sven Marquardt’s work captures rare and extraordinary moments of intimacy.

Conceived as a visual and atmospheric distillation of 25 years of analog photography, the exhibition is less a traditional presentation than a spatial and sensory experience. At Haus der Visionäre, an icon of Berlin’s industrial culture, projections of monumental force unfold for one night only. Four large-scale black-and-white portraits, flanked by towering video installations, are installed at the center of the hall, inviting viewing from all sides. Accompanied by live piano music, a cosmos emerges between beauty and disquiet, between intimacy and stark immediacy. For this project, Marquardt collaborates with Tilius Sodeka (motion and sound design) and Tavy Hornbrook (visual art).

Rooted in his proximity to club culture, fashion, and art, Marquardt’s images function both as chronicle and as staging, as portrait and as condensation. Disturbing Beauty reveals how his photography transcends the documentary: becoming mirrors of a sensibility inseparably bound to Berlin itself.
